A celebratory kite-flying event in Vasai took a dangerous turn when a 39-year-old motorcyclist, Vikram Dange, suffered deep neck injuries caused by banned Chinese manjha. The incident, which occurred during Makar Sankranti festivities, has raised serious concerns about the safety measures adopted by event organizers.
The Incident
The accident happened on Sunday evening in the Madhubani area, where the kite-flying festival was being held. Dange, accompanied by his wife Neetal and their 10-year-old son, was riding through the locality when the sharp synthetic thread became entangled around his neck.
In a stroke of quick thinking, Neetal used her dupatta to staunch the bleeding before rushing him to a nearby multi-specialty hospital. Doctors treated the wounds with nine stitches, and while Dange was discharged on Monday, he has been advised to take complete bed rest for nearly 25 days.
Speaking about the ordeal, Neetal shared her frustrations. “I have no issue with kite-flying festivals, but safety precautions should be a priority. This could have been much worse. I don’t understand why people continue to use Chinese manjha when it is known to cause fatal accidents.”
A Banned Threat
Chinese manjha, a synthetic kite string coated with abrasive substances like glass or metal, is officially banned in India due to its life-threatening nature. However, the continued sale and use of this hazardous material remain rampant, leading to injuries and fatalities every year, especially during festivals like Makar Sankranti.
“Every year, we see such tragic incidents. Some victims lose their lives on the spot because of this deadly thread. Why is it still being sold? And why do people insist on using it despite the ban?” Neetal questioned, her voice filled with frustration.
Legal Action
Following the incident, Neetal filed a complaint at Valiv Police Station. In response, an FIR was registered against Conceptual Advisory Services of Suraksha Smart City, the organizers of the kite-flying festival.
Zonal Deputy Commissioner Pournima Chougule-Shringi confirmed the development. “We have taken action under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. While we continuously crack down on the sale of Chinese manjha, we urge the public to avoid endangering lives by using it. Our teams are conducting surprise checks to ensure compliance.”
Despite these measures, no arrests have been made yet in connection with the case.

The incident has sparked a renewed call for stricter enforcement of the ban on Chinese manjha. Critics argue that existing measures are insufficient, as the hazardous thread continues to be readily available in local markets.

Deputy Commissioner Chougule-Shringi reiterated the police’s commitment to public safety, stating that a zero-tolerance policy is in place to prevent such accidents. However, she also highlighted the need for community cooperation.
