In a shocking incident, a 59-year-old woman residing in Vasai, a coastal town in western India, fell victim to an online scam on Telegram, losing a whopping 85 lakhs. The scam, cleverly disguised as various tasks on the messaging platform, lured the victim with the prospect of earning money while working from home. The incident sheds light on the dangers of online deception and the vulnerabilities associated with remote work opportunities.
The victim, who resides in Vasai’s coastal region, received a call in April from someone claiming to be Janhavi Patel. Patel offered her an opportunity to work from home by participating in hotel ratings on the Trivago company’s website. The victim was told that by nominating various hotels worldwide, she could earn 930 rupees for each nomination.
After completing 28 nominations, the victim was promised a total of 26,040 rupees. However, things took a dark turn when the scammers demanded additional payments for various reasons, including deluxe ratings, VIP channel fees, and income tax charges. The victim, trusting the legitimacy of the operation, ended up providing her bank details to the cyber criminals, who then proceeded to siphon off a staggering 8,395,000 rupees from her account.
The fraudsters used 32 bank accounts for their illicit activities, and the victim’s account was hit 43 times, resulting in a loss of 8,395,000 rupees. Shockingly, she received only 18,330 rupees in return. The entire scam unfolded over a period of eight months before the victim realized she had fallen prey to fraudulent activities. Subsequently, she reported the incident to the Vasai Police, leading to the registration of a case under sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as two charges related to the misuse of Telegram.
