Authorities in Vasai-Virar have confirmed that 2,500 families face eviction due to the reservation of land for a sewage treatment plant and dumping ground. The designated site, located in Mauje Achole, Nalasopara East, has been allocated for critical urban infrastructure projects. Following a Supreme Court ruling, the eviction of 41 buildings on this land has been mandated, though the court has also recommended exploring rehabilitation options for those affected.

On March 22, Industries Minister Uday Samant addressed the situation in the Maharashtra legislative assembly, pledging government action. “We will formulate a policy for the rehabilitation of these 2,500 families,” Samant declared, emphasizing collaboration with the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority to facilitate the process.

The matter was raised in the assembly by MLA Rajan Naik, with support from MLA Parag Alwani. Minister Samant added that discussions are scheduled with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to finalize the rehabilitation framework.

Vasai-Virar, a fast-developing suburb of Mumbai, continues to face challenges in balancing urban expansion with housing demands. This eviction highlights the broader struggles of accommodating residents amid ongoing infrastructure development.

As of now, the families affected by the eviction remain uncertain about their future, with no official timeline released for the relocation process. Authorities have yet to provide specific details on the destinations or logistics of the rehabilitation effort.

The commitment to rehabilitation offers hope to the 2,500 families impacted in Vasai-Virar. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of this initiative will depend on the swift and coordinated execution of a comprehensive policy by the state government.
