The much-awaited 35th Vasai Kala Krida Mahotsav was inaugurated on Thursday evening at the historic Narveer Chimaji Appa Cricket Ground in Vasai. Organized by the Vasai Taluka Kala Krida Vikas Mandal, in collaboration with the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation and supported by the Young Star Trust of Virar, this grand event is a testament to the enduring tradition of celebrating sports and art in the region.

This year’s festival was officially opened by former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar and acclaimed Marathi filmmaker Kedar Shinde. Their presence added a spark to the event, with both lauding the efforts of the organizers and especially acknowledging the visionary leadership of Hitendra Thakur, who has played a pivotal role in making the festival a success over the years.

A Festival with a Purpose

In his address, Kedar Shinde highlighted the festival’s positive impact on young participants, saying, “In a world dominated by mobile screens, Kala Krida Mahotsav has succeeded in bringing children back to playgrounds, fostering a love for sports and healthy competition.”

Former cricketer Sanjay Bangar shared similar sentiments, appreciating the platform provided for budding athletes and artists.

Also gracing the inauguration were several dignitaries, including Nalasopara MLA Rajan Naik, former MLAs Kshitij Thakur and Rajesh Patil, Vasai Virar Municipal Commissioner Ramesh Manale, former MP Baliram Jadhav, ex-Mayor Narayan Mankar, Pravin Shetty, and Tehsildar Avinash Koshti. Presiding over the ceremony was former MLA Hitendra Thakur, whose vision in 1990 gave birth to this festival.

New Competitions Added

This year, Kala Krida Mahotsav has expanded its horizons, adding four new sports categories to its roster: squash, women’s lathi-kathi, dahi-handi, and judo karate. These additions reflect the organizers’ commitment to inclusivity and innovation.

In total, the festival will feature 72 competitions—34 in the arts category and 38 in sports, catering to participants from various age groups. From music and dance performances to team sports and individual athletic events, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and excel in.

A Growing Legacy

What started in 1990 with 3,500 participants has grown into a massive event, with this year’s edition welcoming over 55,000 participants. Over the decades, the festival has nurtured talent, strengthened community ties, and fostered a culture of healthy competition and artistic expression.

This year’s Kala Krida Mahotsav promises to be the biggest yet, showcasing a wide array of talent from across the region. The festival is not just a competition; it’s a celebration of unity, effort, and creativity.
